Three Old-School Web Design Trends That Are Making A Comeback In 2023
As a world-class web design agency in Sydney, we at Spin Design try to make sure that we keep a close eye on web design trends so that we can deliver the best and most appealing websites to our clients that are in keeping with the times.
Interestingly, we have seen a steady resurgence of 20-year-old web design trends that we expect will continue to pick up steam in 2023. Let us have a look at three of them now.
Y2K Aesthetic
The year 2000 ‒ also known as Y2K ‒ was a turning point in fashion and art. On the one hand, we were heading out of the gritty and grungey 90s and moving into what we perceived as a futuristic new millennium, filled with possibilities, new technology and new social spaces as the Internet continued to gain momentum.
This new hopeful attitude in society meant that a more colourful and kitsch aesthetic was on the rise in terms of fashion, art and ‒ of course ‒ web design. Web design was still being figured out and so there was a lot of experimentation going on. This design philosophy, sometimes referred to as retrofuturism, is making a comeback.
Customisable Cursors
Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, a trend emerged where computer users had endless fun playing around with customised cursors. These could range from a kitty cat to a ghost trailing mist behind it instead of the conventional arrow.
At some point, these fun cursor designs fell away and generally stopped being used. Now, 20 years later, they are making a comeback. However, this time they are being coded into websites and play a significant role in establishing the aesthetic and tone of the website.
Pixelation
When images are pixelated, it is considered a bad thing. Pixelated images are low quality and not aesthetically pleasing.
However, in the modern age, with ultra high definition images being so commonplace, web designers have started deliberately using pixelated designs to stand out. This retro look harkens back to the 90s when high-definition imagery on websites was difficult to load and thus generally avoided. Nowadays, going for a deliberately pixelated design is seen as interesting and fun.
